In Katherine Norman's Blue series, she reflects the lyrical abstraction of detailed images of elements like water and air that have been pushed and pulled by both gravity and the artist’s hand. These works share a similar contemplative and textural sensibility with Japanese ink wash paintings that similarly used a mixture of bold forms and muted gestures to convey the spiritual essence of their subjects. These paintings also share visual references to Norman’s interest in Abstract Expressionism, which is seen in the treatment of her color fields as they seemingly expand and contract on the surface of her canvases.
